Top 10 Effective Ways to Overcome your Fear

Everything you want is on the other side of fear-rightly said by someone. Fear is something that always keeps us demotivated and away from experience new things. Well, let my begin this by narrating my story of fear and how I was able to conquer it. I had this fear of water that always kept me away from enjoying going into rivers, rafting and so on. Believe it or not, I was scared even to go to the bank of a river. But this April, a couple of my friends decided to go Hrishikesh and try out rafting. After getting so-called lectures, actually ‘motivation’ from my friends, I said “yes”. What happened next is something which I am going to cherish throughout my life, the memories back there is still as if I went for rafting the previous day. At first I felt like giving up but the constant efforts of my lovely friends and of course the guide made me sail through my fear. Here is a list of some effective ways you can try to overcome your fear.

10. Take time out

As the fear comes in your mind, you get flooded with fear or anxiety. So, the very first thing to do is take time out so you can physically and mentally calm down. Try to distract yourself for some 20 minutes and then when you feel that you have calmed down, and then find out the best ways to overcome your fear.

9. Reward yourself

Give yourself a treat. When you’ve picked up that spider or made that call you’ve been dreading, enjoy your success by treating yourself to a massage, a country walk, a concert, a meal out, a book, or whatever little gift makes you happy.

8. Talk about it

Sharing fear takes away a lot of scariness. When you are open about it, and you might up end comprehending the exact reasons associated with your fear. So talk to your friends, parents or simply someone who you think won’t make fun of it. There are several help-lines where you can seek help.

7. Keep expectations low

This has to do a lot with most of us. If we are not able to do anything with so-called perfection, then we assume ourselves as failures. Well! I say a complete no to that. You have bad days and setbacks, and you face it, doesn’t it make you much better than those who give up on it. Don’t expect a lot from yourself while you face your fear.

6.  Positive thinking

You need to be optimistic about things. Think about the positive side what you get when you overcome it. Think about the satisfaction and excitement you get from the fact you are no more scare to do the particular thing. You will be able to enjoy your life a lot more than before. You need to have a positive mindset that you have to drive your fear away.

5. Begin with Small steps

Start with small steps, for example if you fear from darkness; start to stay in a slightly dark room with someone. Then slowly increase the darkness and finally try to stay alone. This is applicable to most of the fears. You can also set some other targets such as- do one thing each day that you fear to do. Don’t start with the toughest one as you would give up soon.

4. Yoga and Meditation

This therapy is potentially the best way to overcome your any kind of fear. Yoga and meditation brings a lot of peace and concentration on your activities. You are able to have control on your emotions and you take things positively.

3. Seek Medical Help

Fear can be caused from some medical conditions. You can go to some experts and explain your fear. It is important for your doctor to identify the physical or mental causes for fear. He can treat you using some therapies.

2. Feel the panic

If you start to get a faster heartbeat or sweating palms, the best thing is not to fight it. Stay where you are and simply feel the panic without trying to distract yourself. Placing the palm of your hand on your stomach and breathing slowly and deeply (no more than 12 breaths a minute) helps soothe the body. This might take more time but eventually the panic will go away. You will be able to overcome the fear.

1. Expose yourself

Facing your fear is the only way you can cope with it. The more you run away, the worst it gets to. No doubt, it is challenging and risky but you have to do it. In life, you are going to face it some or the other day, so why not now? At least for now you know that you are aware of it. But in future it may come as something unexpected and drive you into shock and by that time your fear would also grow. So is the severity of the consequences.
